Counseling The Practice New Patients Newsletters FAQ

Amy Marsh, MA, LLPC*

Counseling is a complex and dynamic process of self-exploration designed to facilitate meaningful growth and lasting change. While each individual experiences this process differently, the intended results include improved emotional states, more adaptive behaviors and clarity regarding thinking patterns and decision making.  To this end, it will be essential that we both invest fully in this process.

My professional experience and education has prepared me to work with groups, families, and individuals of all ages, including children, adolescents, and adults.  My theoretical approach is based primarily on Cognitive Behavioral Theory. According to this theory, our behaviors are caused by our feelings, which are results of our thinking.  In other words, if I want to feel or act differently, I must begin by examining my errors in thinking.  As is common with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, I may assign written “homework” or recommend books, films, journaling, or other exercises for you to complete at home.  Individuals who participate fully in these exercises often find that they get more out of their experience in therapy.  In addition, it will be necessary that I challenge you to examine your thinking errors at times.  This process, while not always comfortable, is essential to growth.  People often find that they feel worse before they feel better.  As you cycle through a variety of experiences, it is important that you discuss them with me, in order to allow for our most productive work together.

I believe that you have tremendous power to make meaningful changes when you are given a safe place to explore the motivations, beliefs, thinking, and circumstances which led to those problems in the first place.  It is my honor to provide this safe place, and to participate in this process with you.  It is my sincere hope that you will find this process as valuable and rewarding as I do.
